Darwin’s great gift to mankind was the understanding that came to us from his seminal work  in which he expounded the theory of evolution. His monumental research and observation  spread over several decades on the processes which governed all life on earth, resulted in his seminal work  “On The Origin of Species”.  Nearly 3.5 billion years after life had first emerged on earth did a member of our recently evolved species describe and explain a theory which assigned to us our own place in the scheme of things. While the minor details of the theory of Darwinian evolution keep getting re-adjusted in the light of the new understanding that has come to us with the development of molecular biology and the science of genetics, he will for ever remain the prophet of understanding for all.
