Shahid Parvez

Ustad Shahid Parvez is a descendent of the great Imdad Khani gharana of Sitar players. He is the grandson of Ustad Waheed Khan Sahib, who was the paternal uncle of Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib. Shahid Parvez has not merely emulated the Sitar baaj of Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib, but having extracted the essential techniques of Sitar playing for his own use, he has taken them to new heights of clarity and perfection. While Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib remains his idol to emulate, Shahid Parvez is taking us back to the heydey of Vilayat Khan’s youth when he was at the height of his powers.  Yet he has carved his own style of playing the Sitar and will be remembered as an icon in times to come.  The time has now come for this great artist to be recognised with the highest possible awards. In the meantime the world already knows and appreciates that Ustad Shahid Parvez sits at the very pinnacle of his art, and there will not be another one like him again.

This is my second poem on the great Shahid Parvez. It was inspired by watching a You-Tube video clip of Yaman which he was performing in a private mehfil somewhere.  The quality of the recording is not exemplary, yet those who know anything about music, and have attended his Sitar concerts will know how great this artist is. My present poem was inspired by the clarity of his taanas and the sweetness of his raag exposition. Alongside my tribute in the Urdu poem, there is a further explanatory note provided.
