Sitar

This is a poem about Sitar, an instrument I love to play. The Sitar has evolved as an instrument in the last 800 years on the sub-continent. It was first put in its proto-form by Amir Khusro who used the lute traditions of the Middle East to design it. Over the centuries, as metal and wood-working technologies have evolved, the Sitar has reached its present highly evolved form. The best Sitars are reputedly made in Calcutta, although I have seen some from Lahore in Pakistan which are beautifully crafted, and are now worth collecting for their own sake.
